How Nigeria can achieve unity in diversity, curb sectional agitations – Prof Pate

Boosting the economies of states across Nigeria for the various state governments and people to rely less on Abuja for sustenance, is a significant strategy for fostering individual fulfillment and maintaining public confidence in the nation.

A renowned Mass Communications scholar and Vice Chancellor of Federal University, Kashere, Professor Umar Pate, who made this point in a public lecture in Yola, Adamawa state, said: “There is a connection between economic opportunities of the country and the level of struggles and fights for control of resources at the centre. We need to ensure that every part of Nigeria is economically active and reduce the dependence of states and LGAs on federal allocations.”

Pate, who delivered a public lecture on Nigeria’s diversity in honour of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s Chief of Staff, Dr Edgar Solomon who turned 60 at the weekend, said economically sound sub-national centres “create opportunities for all citizens so that people’s faith in the country can be sustained with less intensification for central control or violent struggles for other alternatives.

The chairman of the public lecture in honour of Edgar Sunday, Boss Mustapha who is the immediate past Secretary to the Government of the Federation, said Sunday is a trusted public servant who was made head of the state civil service by the immediate past Governor, Senator Jibrilla Bindow, and who was retained by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri who has since raised him to the position of chief of staff.

On his part, Governor Fintiri, who spoke through his deputy, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, expressed hope that more doors of success would open for the celebrant as he enters the ‘6th floor’ of life.

Edgar, who formally retires from the state civil service by clocking 60, thanked all people of goodwill for identifying with him.
